As a child I saw what the grown-ups could not.
I knew before hearing. I felt every thought.
They laughed at the girl who spoke to the air,
I learned very young that the knowing was rare.
It was teased, it was beaten, it was shamed out of me.
And for twenty plus years I forgot how to be.
So I folded it small and I kept it inside,
I called myself normal, and quietly died.
I've learned this before. More than once at the pyre.
For seeing too clearly. For embracing my fire.
There are lifetimes of ash on the soles of my feet.
There are names I still answer to, down in the deep.
I can't tell you how I know what I know.
It arrives like the tide. It don't ask, it just flows.
No lesson, no logic, no book on the shelf,
Just a truth in my heart that I don't give myself.
I was always the one that the room couldn't place.
The one that they feared, with the too-open face.
It took me years, took me tears, to love what they fear.
I am an enigma, and I keep my gifts near.
So if you were that child, and you've felt this too,
If you saw things were different and it frightened you.
If they laughed, or they hushed, or they prayed you'd be plain,
I see you. I've been you. So let's start again.
This house is for you. Its intention, to free.
Light a candle and enter, so mote it be.
