- The Deck -
The tarot is a deck of seventy-eight cards,
divided into two arcana.
- The Major Arcana -
The Major Arcana holds twenty-two cards, beginning with The Fool and ending with The World.
These are the large movements: the turns a life takes, the lessons that arrive whether or not they are invited, the thresholds crossed once and then never returned from.
When a Major card appears in a reading it sets the tone for everything else on the table.
- The Minor Arcana -
The Minor Arcana holds fifty-six cards across four suits.
Where the Major speaks to the shape of a life, the Minor speaks to the texture of a week.
These are the cards of circumstance, of the practical and the daily, of what is currently happening rather than what is being learned.
Each suit governs a territory.
- Wands -
Wands are Fire.
Will, drive and creation.
Ambition, momentum, the work you are called to.
What you want and whether you are moving toward it.
- Cups -
Cups are Water.
Feeling, relationshipS and intuition.
Love, grief, the interior life and what moves beneath it.
What you love and what you are avoiding feeling.
- Swords -
Swords are Air.
Thought, truth and decision.
Clarity, conflict, the things that must be said.
What you know and what you are refusing to admit to.
- Pentacles -
Pentacles are Earth.
Body, money and work.
The material world, what is built and what it costs.
The house, the wage, the body that carries the labour.
Each suit runs Ace through Ten,
Then there are four court cards:
Page, Knight, Queen and King.
The numbered cards describe situations.
The court cards describe people, or the parts of yourself that behave like them.
- Interpreting Each Card -
Every card here is given upright and reversed.
Upright is the card in its own direction.
Reversed is the same energy turned: blocked, excessive, internal, or delayed.
A reversed card is not a negative card.
It is the same truth arriving differently, and it is usually asking for a correction, rather than offering a warning.
The meanings on this site are written to be general on purpose.
A card does not know your circumstances. It reports a pattern. The reading resonates with where you recognise that pattern in in your life.
If a meaning here feels vague as you read it, sit with it rather than dismissing it. The specificity is yours to supply.
Read the imagery as well as the meaning.
The Rider Waite Smith illustrations that most readers learn from are dense with conscious and deliberate symbol, and much of what a card is saying sits in this detail rather than a keyword. Each card page describes what is depicted and what those elements carry symbols of.
Trust the first thing you feel when the card turns over. It is usually correct, and it is usually the thing you then talk yourself out of.
- The Practice -
Divination is old and a skill we all have.
It has been done with cards, bones, water, smoke, entrails and tea,
but the instrument used has never been the point.
The instrument simply gives the knowing somewhere physical and meaningful to land.
A card does not decide anything.
It shows you a pattern clearly enough that you can no longer pretend not to see it.
What you do about it remains your decision.
