· The Major Arcana ·

Twenty-two cards. The larger arcs of a life.

The Major Arcana are the twenty-two cards that sit above the four suits.

The Minor Arcana deal with your week.

The Major Arcana deal with your life.

These are the big ones. New chapters, hard lessons and the moments that will fundamentally change you.

They tend to arrive whether you've asked for them or not.

They are not to be feared, they are a gift.

They run from zero to twenty-one, starting with The Fool and ending with The World.

Everything in between is a life being lived.

When a Major card shows up in a reading, pay attention to it first.

The other cards will fill in the detail. This one tells you what's really going on.

Read one at a time, each card is a moment.

Read in order, they tell the story of life.

- The Fool's Journey -

The Fool sets out at zero. Carrying little and knowing almost nothing.

Everything that follows is what he* meets.

The Magician shows him what he can make with will.

The High Priestess shows him what cannot be reached by asking.

He meets the mother in The Empress and the father in The Emperor, belief in The Hierophant, and desire in The Lovers. He takes the reins in The Chariot, finds his strength, and withdraws entirely in The Hermit to understand what he has gathered.

The Wheel of Fortune turns without consulting him.

Justice weighs him. The Hanged Man suspends him, and Death ends what will not continue.

Temperance restores his balance and The Devil shows him what he is bound to. The Tower falls, and everything he's built on a false foundations crumbles to the ground with it.

What follows the Tower is repair.

The Star quietly returns his hope. The Moon reveals his deepest fears and depth unveiled only in the dark. The Sun returns clarity. Judgement calls him to account for all of it, and The World completes him, which returns him to the beginning as someone who's been through it all.

This is why The Fool holds no number.

He is not the first card in the sequence.

He is the one walking through all of them.

*Above we refer to The Fool as he, though gender identity is not the point. Masculine and feminine are read as one. We all have masculine and feminine within us, one never greater or more precious than another. Both are necessary for a full and balanced life.

- The Practice -

The Fool steps off the cliff at zero and arrives at The World with everything he met along the way now part of who he is.

That is the whole of the Major Arcana: twenty-two turnings, each one a threshold he could not go around.

But nobody lives at a threshold every day.

Most days are not a Tower or a Death or a World revolution.

Most days are a conversation that needs to be had, a body that needs rest, an act that needs attention or work that needs finishing.

The Fool's Journey is the shape of a life.

The Minor Arcana is the living of it.
