MAJOR ARCANA

Twenty. Reckoning. Awakening. The whole of it called to account.

A winged figure descends from the clouds sounding a trumpet, and below, figures rise from open caskets with their arms lifted.

The caskets float on a wide still sea and they are already open. Nobody is being forced out. They are standing and reaching upward of their own accord.

From the trumpet hangs a square banner marked with a cross. A call, formally made, that everybody can hear at the same time.

The figures rising are men, women and children together. Whole families, whole lives, everyone included and nobody sorted.

Distant snow mountains close the horizon, the same peaks that have appeared throughout the deck, seen now from the other side.

The sea beneath is entirely calm.

It is the twentieth teacher, and it is the second to last. The Sun gave the Fool clarity about his present. Judgement asks him to look at the whole of it, everything from the first step off the cliff, and decide what it added up to.

- Upright -

Reckoning. Awakening. Calling. Absolution.

Judgement upright asks you to look at the whole of it honestly.

This is a card of review rather than punishment. Something has run its course, a chapter or a version of your life, and this is the point where you assess it properly. What worked, what did not, what you did, what it made you.

There is awakening in it. A realisation that reorganises how you see everything behind it. The pattern becoming visible, the reason a thing kept happening becoming obvious.

Where this card appears, something clicks into place.

It is also the card of the calling. A pull toward something you have been aware of for a long time and have not answered. A change of direction, a vocation, work that means something. Judgement says the call has been made and you have heard it. The only question is the answer.

Forgiveness sits here, and mostly self forgiveness. The figures rise without being sorted into deserving and undeserving. If you have been carrying something you did years ago, this card is the release of it. You have already served that sentence.

Decisions made under this card tend to be final in a good way. Clear-eyed, informed by everything that came before, and not revisited.

Look at all of it. Take what it taught you. Then answer.

- Reversed -

Self doubt. Avoidance. Harsh judgement. Ignoring the call.

Reversed, the reckoning is being avoided or has turned cruel.

The most common reading is harsh self judgement. The review done and the verdict merciless. Every mistake counted, nothing forgiven, an account kept against yourself that you would never keep against anyone else.

Reversed, this card asks you to apply the same standard to yourself that you apply to people you love.

There is also avoidance. Refusing to look back at all, because looking would mean acknowledging something. The chapter closed without being read.

Reversed frequently marks an ignored calling. Knowing what you are meant to be doing and continuing not to do it. Not from laziness, usually from fear that it is too late or too impractical. The card does not accept either reason.

There is a reading around external judgement too. Being harshly assessed by someone else, or a decision made about you that did not account for the whole picture.

Sometimes it is doubt. The realisation arriving and being immediately talked out of.

The correction is a fair hearing.

What actually happened, what you actually learned, and what you would tell a friend in the same position.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

A reckoning. An honest assessment of the relationship, a conversation that clears the whole account, or a decision made with full understanding of the history.

It also marks reconciliation, including with the past. Forgiveness given or received, an old wound finally set down.

Reversed

Old grievances not released. Something from years ago still being carried into every present disagreement.

Reversed can also indicate self blame after a relationship ended, held long past the point where it serves anything.

- Career and Money -

Upright

A calling. Work that means something, a change of direction that has been coming for a long time, or a decision that resolves a long question.

With money, an honest full review of the position. Everything counted, nothing avoided.

Reversed

Ignoring what you know you should be doing. Staying in work that does not fit because changing feels impractical.

With money, avoiding the full picture. Reversed asks for the complete number rather than the parts you are comfortable looking at.

- Health -

Upright

A turning point. A diagnosis that explains a long pattern, or a decision to address something properly at last.

Recovery following honest assessment.

Reversed

Avoiding an assessment, or an unduly harsh view of your own body and habits.

If you have been putting off a check, this is the card that asks you to make the appointment.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Yes. You already know the answer and this is confirmation.

Reversed

No, or not yet. Something needs an honest look first.
