MAJOR ARCANA

Seven. Drive. Control. Forward motion held by will.

An armoured figure stands upright in a stone chariot beneath a canopy of stars.

He is standing rather than seated. This is not a comfortable ride. It requires him to remain balanced while the thing moves.

Two sphinxes are harnessed in front, one dark and one pale. They face slightly different directions and they are not obviously cooperating. There are no reins in his hands. He holds only a wand, and the chariot moves anyway, which tells you the control here is not physical. He is holding them by will alone.

On his shoulders are two crescent moons. Above his brow a star, and on his belt and skirt the symbols of time and the zodiac. A winged emblem is carved on the front of the chariot.

Behind him stands a walled city. He has left it. Whatever he built there was not the destination.

He is the seventh teacher. The Lovers required the Fool to choose, and the Chariot is what choosing looks like once it is in motion. The decision made, the alternatives abandoned, the difficult forces pulling in opposite directions held together by nothing but the driver's refusal to let go.

- Upright -

Drive. Willpower. Determination. Victory.

The Chariot upright says keep going, and go hard.

This is a card of momentum. Something is moving in your favour and it will continue to move as long as you continue to drive it. It does not run on its own. Take your attention off it and it stops.

Control is the theme, and it is control of yourself before anything else. The two sphinxes are the parts of you that want different things, and the Chariot does not resolve that conflict. It harnesses it. You are not required to become simple or single minded. You are required to keep both parts pulling in the same direction long enough to arrive.

This is one of the strongest cards in the deck for victory, and the victory is earned rather than given. It comes from discipline, focus and refusing to be diverted. Where this card appears, the obstacles are real and you are stronger than they are.

There is travel in it, often literal. Movement, relocation, leaving somewhere behind.

The walled city behind him matters. Something has to be left in order to move. If you are trying to advance without giving anything up, that is why it feels stuck.

Take the wheel. Hold your direction. Do not negotiate with yourself about it every morning.

- Reversed -

Loss of direction. Force. Scattered effort. Stalling.

Reversed, the momentum has failed in one of two ways.

The first is loss of control. The sphinxes are pulling apart and nobody is holding them. Effort scattered in several directions, energy spent without progress, a great deal of movement and no distance covered. Reversed, ask what you are actually driving toward, because the card suggests you may not currently be able to name it.

The second is force. Willpower turned into aggression, pushing at something that needs a different approach entirely. The Chariot reversed can be someone bulldozing a situation that required patience, and doing damage on the way through.

There is also stalling. The decision made and the motion never started. The chariot built and never driven.

Reversed can indicate a loss of self control in a more ordinary sense. Reactions rather than responses, temper, impulse. The card is not moralising about this. It is pointing out that the driver is being driven.

The correction is to name the destination in one sentence. If you cannot, that is the work before anything else moves.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

Forward motion. A relationship progressing, an obstacle overcome, a decision to pursue something properly. If you are single, this card favours the direct approach.

It also asks for self control and patience. The Chariot succeeds through steadiness, not intensity. Do not push it faster than it will go.

Reversed

Pushing too hard, or two people pulling in different directions. Reversed can indicate a relationship where one person is driving and the other is being dragged.

It can also mean a connection that has stalled. All the intent and none of the movement.

- Career and Money -

Upright

Very strong. Ambition rewarded, a goal reached, competition won. A good card for launching, for taking on something demanding, and for any situation requiring you to outlast other people.

With money, discipline pays here. Hold the plan. The results come from consistency rather than from a single clever move.

Reversed

Effort without direction. Working hard on several things and finishing none. Or a workplace where you are being pushed rather than led.

With money, reversed can mean spending or investing without a strategy, or a plan abandoned partway through.

- Health -

Upright

Strength returning, recovery, the discipline to stick to something. Good for anything requiring sustained effort over time.

Mental control matters here as much as physical. Steady is the instruction.

Reversed

Pushing the body past what it can currently do. Training through injury, working through exhaustion, treating rest as failure.

Can also indicate stress from a situation you are trying to control that is not yours to control.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Yes. Move forward and hold your direction.

Reversed

Not yet. Something is scattered or being forced.
