MAJOR ARCANA

Fifteen. Bondage. Appetite. The chain that was never locked.

A horned figure sits on a heavy stone cube, and two figures stand chained to a ring at its base.

The chains are loose. That is the entire card and everything else is decoration. The loops around their necks are wide enough to lift off, and neither of them is reaching up.

Above the brow of the seated figure is an inverted five pointed star. One hand is raised in a sign, the other holds a lowered torch, fire pointed at the ground where it burns nothing and lights nothing.

The cube is solid and heavy and takes up most of the lower card. It is matter, weight, the physical world at its most immovable.

The two chained figures have small horns of their own. They have begun to resemble what holds them, which is what happens over time.

There is no landscape. The background is entirely black. Nothing else exists in this card, which is exactly how the situation feels from the inside.

It is the fifteenth teacher, and it arrives directly after Temperance for a reason. Moderation is the balance point, and this is what happens when a thing is allowed past it.

- Upright -

Bondage. Attachment. Appetite. Materialism.

The Devil upright says you are held by something, but you could choose differently.

That second part is the card. Whatever this is, it is not a prison. It is an attachment you have not been willing to release, and the reason it holds is that some part of you still wants it.

It appears around addiction in the broad sense. Substance, yes, but equally a person, a job, money, status, a story about yourself, a relationship you know is wrong and keep returning to. Anything you keep choosing while telling yourself you have no choice.

There is honesty required here and it is uncomfortable. The card asks what you are actually getting out of this. There is always something, or it would have ended already. Comfort, familiarity, an identity, an excuse. Be honest about the hang-up and the chain loosens on its own.

This is also the card of appetite, and here the reading turns. Desire is not the problem in this deck. The Devil is not a warning against wanting things. It is a warning about wanting something so much that it does the choosing for you. The distinction is control, not content.

Materialism sits here too. Life arranged entirely around what can be counted, with the rest of it quietly starving.

Look at what holds you. Then look at whether you have actually tried to take it off.

- Reversed -

Release. Recognition. Breaking free. Facing it.

Reversed, this is one of the most hopeful cards in the deck.

The chain is coming off. Reversed, the Devil marks the point where someone recognises what has been holding them and begins to move. Recovery, leaving, ending the thing, telling the truth about it. Where this card appears reversed, the worst of it is behind you.

That release is rarely clean and the card knows it. Reversed can also mean the beginning of that process rather than the end. Awareness arrived, action not yet taken. Knowing exactly what the problem is and still standing there.

There is another reading, which is the attachment going underground. Not released, just less visible. The behaviour changed and the need unaddressed, which usually reappears wearing something else.

Reversed can also indicate confronting something you have avoided looking at directly for a long time. That is difficult and it is the correct direction.

The card asks for one honest step rather than overnight transformation. If something in your life fits this card and you have been managing it alone, telling one person is the first step here.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

An attachment rather than a partnership. Intense, difficult to leave, and not good for you. The card is direct about this.

It can also indicate a relationship where control has entered, or where two people are staying together out of habit and fear rather than choice. In a healthy relationship it can simply mean strong physical desire, which is not a problem in itself.

Reversed

Leaving, or beginning to. Recognising a pattern, ending something that was harmful, reclaiming your own decisions.

Reversed can also be the point of recognition before the leaving. If that is where you are, tell someone.

- Career and Money -

Upright

A job that holds you through money or fear rather than choice. The golden handcuffs reading. Stability that has become a cage.

With money, debt, dependence, or spending that has stopped being decided. Look at the actual figure.

Reversed

Leaving the role, clearing the debt, breaking the arrangement. The beginning of freedom, and usually with a cost attached that is worth paying.

- Health -

Upright

A habit doing damage. The card covers substances, but equally overwork, undereating, compulsive routines, anything with a hold on you.

Recognising it is the whole of what the card asks at this stage.

Reversed

Recovery beginning. Breaking a habit, seeking help, addressing something long avoided.

If any of this is live for you, speaking to a doctor or a professional is the practical step, and it is not an overreaction.

- Yes or No -

Upright

No. Something here is not freely chosen.

Reversed

Yes. Something is being released and the direction is right.
