A crowned figure sits upright on a heavy stone throne, entirely still.
Where the Empress reclined among wheat and cushions, he sits square and rigid on carved stone. Four rams' heads are worked into the throne, the ram belonging to Aries and to the will that pushes forward without being asked twice.
In one hand he holds an ankh sceptre, in the other a globe. Life and dominion, one in each hand.
Beneath his robe he wears armour. He is not at war, and he has not taken it off. This is a man who stays prepared as a matter of habit rather than fear.
Behind him rise barren mountains, and a narrow river runs at their foot. The mountains are the reason he is necessary. Nothing grows there without effort, without a plan, without someone deciding where the water goes.
He is the fourth teacher. The Empress gave the Fool abundance. The Emperor gives it edges. Growth without structure runs wild and exhausts itself, and this card is the discipline that lets a thing last.
