A crowned figure reclines on a deeply cushioned throne set outdoors in a field of ripe wheat.
She is not seated upright and formal. She is comfortable, at ease, entirely unhurried. The cushions are heavy and the posture is one of a person who has nothing to prove.
Her crown carries twelve stars. Her robe is patterned with pomegranates, the fruit of fertility and of the underworld both. In one hand she holds a sceptre. Beside her rests a heart shaped shield marked with the sign of Venus, love and beauty made into something that also protects.
The wheat at her feet is ripe and ready to be cut. Behind her a cypress forest stands and a waterfall falls into a stream. Everything in the card is either growing, flowing or ready to be harvested.
She is the third teacher. The Magician showed the Fool how to direct will. The High Priestess showed him how to be still and receive. The Empress shows him what happens when those two meet and become something physical: a body, a harvest, a made thing in the world.
