A young man stands at the edge of a cliff, one foot already over it, entirely untroubled.
He is setting out. His face is turned up toward the sky rather than down at the drop, and he appears not to know the drop is there.
Over his shoulder rests a staff carrying a small knapsack. It holds everything he owns, which is very little. In his left hand he carries a white rose, traditionally read as purity and innocence. In his cap sits a red feather, the same feather that appears again in Death and in The Sun, marking vitality and life force. At his feet a small white dog leaps. The dog is loyalty and protection, and it urges him forward rather than holding him back.
Behind him the sun sits low and full, the beginning of a new day. Ahead of him rise mountains, the difficulties he has not yet met. The card is numbered zero, the number of unlimited potential, which means it holds no fixed position in the deck. The Fool can be placed at the very start of the Major Arcana or at the very end.
The twenty-two Major Arcana cards are often read as the Fool's own journey through life, meeting each teacher in turn and arriving finally at The World. Because he is present throughout that journey, he needs no number at all.
