MAJOR ARCANA

Six. Union. Desire. The choice that cannot be made halfway.

Two figures stand apart beneath a great winged figure emerging from cloud with both arms raised over them.

They are not touching. They stand separately, facing forward, each fully themselves. Whatever joins them is not proximity.

Behind one grows a tree of flame. Behind the other a flowering tree with a serpent coiled around its trunk. Desire and knowledge, appetite and consequence, and the oldest story about what happens when someone chooses.

A mountain rises between them, and a radiant sun fills the sky above.

The winged figure overhead is blessing them, not deciding for them. It is present and it does not intervene. The choice stays with the two below.

He is the sixth teacher. The Hierophant handed the Fool a tradition and told him how it has always been done. The Lovers is the first card where he has to decide something for himself, knowing it cannot be unchosen.

- Upright -

Union. Alignment. Desire. Choice.

The Lovers upright is a card of alignment.

Something is coming together properly. Two people, two parts of a life, a want and a decision, and where they meet there is real heat. This is the strongest card in the deck for relationship, and it means more than attraction. It means being met.

But this is a card of choice before it is a card of romance, and the choice is the harder half. Something in front of you cannot be half taken. You cannot keep the alternative in reserve. The Lovers appears where someone has been trying to have both and the moment for that has passed.

The two figures stand separately, and that is deliberate. Union here does not mean dissolving into another person. It means two whole people choosing each other, which is only possible if each of them is genuinely whole.

Values sit at the centre of this card. Whatever you choose here should be chosen from what you actually believe rather than what would be easier to explain. The decision made against your own values will hold for a while and then it will not.

There is desire in it too, and no shame attached. The flame is in the card on purpose. What you want is legitimate information, not a weakness to be corrected.

Choose. Whole heart, no reserve.

- Reversed -

Misalignment. Avoidance. Imbalance. Values in conflict.

Reversed, the tradition and the person have come apart.

Reversed, the alignment is off or the choice is being avoided.

The most common reading is a decision not made. Sitting between two options, keeping both alive, unwilling to lose either. Reversed, the card is direct about it: refusing to choose is itself a choice, and it is the one that costs the most.

It can also mean genuine misalignment. Two people who want each other and want different lives. This is a painful reading and an honest one. Attraction is not the problem. Compatibility is.

Reversed can indicate imbalance. One person invested and the other not, or one person's needs consistently outweighing the other's. The two figures stand as equals in the upright card, and reversed that equality has slipped.

Sometimes it points inward, to a conflict between your values and your behaviour. Doing one thing while believing another. That gap is uncomfortable to look at and it does not close on its own.

Reversed also appears around temptation, and around choices made for the wrong reason: fear, convenience, or not wanting to be alone.

Ask what you actually value, then look at what you are actually doing.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

The best card in the deck for this. Real connection, mutual desire, a partnership of equals. If you are single, this often marks a significant meeting. If you are partnered, it can mark a deepening or a decision. Commitment, moving forward, choosing this person properly rather than by default.

The card asks for wholeness on both sides. Come to it as yourself.

Reversed

Imbalance or misalignment. Wanting different things, or one person carrying more of the relationship than the other.

It also appears where someone is keeping their options open. A third person, an ex not fully released, or simple unwillingness to commit. The card asks for honesty about which.

- Career and Money -

Upright

A choice between two paths, and the card says choose the one that fits your values rather than the one that pays or impresses. Also strong for partnership, collaboration and work with someone whose skills complement yours.

With money, a decision aligned with what you actually care about will hold better than one made purely on numbers.

Reversed

A decision being avoided, or a partnership out of balance. Look at whether the contribution on each side is genuinely equal.

With money, reversed can mean spending that conflicts with your stated priorities. The account is a more honest record of your values than the intention is.

- Health -

Upright

Balance between body and mind. A choice about how you live, made from care rather than punishment.

Good for anything requiring commitment to a decision. Choose the approach and follow it properly rather than sampling several.

Reversed

Knowing what is good for you and doing the other thing. The gap between intention and behaviour is the whole reading here.

Can also indicate stress from an unresolved decision being carried in the body.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Yes, if it aligns with what you actually value.

Reversed

No, or not yet. A choice is being avoided or something is out of balance.
