A figure stands behind a low table with one arm raised to the sky and the other pointing down at the earth.
The raised hand holds a wand. The lowered hand is empty. This is the oldest idea in the deck, that what exists above also exists below, and that a person standing between the two can draw one down into the other.
Above his head floats a horizontal figure of eight, the sign of the infinite. Around his waist is a serpent swallowing its own tail, which is the same idea again: no beginning, no end, energy returning to itself.
On the table in front of him lie four objects. A cup, a sword, a wand and a disc. These are the four suits of the Minor Arcana and the four elements, and they are laid out ready to hand. Everything he needs is already on the table. Nothing has to be found or waited for.
He wears white beneath and red above. Purity of intention under worldly experience. Around him roses and lilies grow thickly, desire and clarity together in the same garden.
The Magician is the first numbered card. The Fool has taken the step and now meets the first teacher, who tells him that he has more power than he understands and shows him the tools he was already carrying.
