MAJOR ARCANA

Sixteen. Collapse. Revelation. What falls because it was built wrong.

A tall tower stands on a jagged peak and lightning strikes its crown.

The crown is being knocked off. Not the building, the crown, and it comes away in a single stroke. Whatever was placed on top of this structure did not belong there and the lightning has come specifically for it.

Flames break from three narrow windows. Two figures fall headlong through the air on either side, one crowned and one not. Nobody is spared by rank here.

Around them, twenty two points of flame are scattered across the black sky.

The tower itself is built on rock, high and isolated, with very few windows. It was constructed to keep things out and to see very little.

There is no ground visible beneath the falling figures. The card does not show you the landing.

It is the sixteenth teacher, and it follows the Devil precisely. The Devil showed the Fool the chain he was choosing to wear. The Tower is what happens when he will not take it off: the structure it was attached to comes down, and takes the decision out of his hands.

- Upright -

Sudden change. Collapse. Revelation. Truth.

Many people fear change.

As such, The Tower upright is the card people least want to draw. But it is not the disaster that it looks like.

Something is coming down, and it is coming down suddenly. A structure in your life that seemed permanent is going to be revealed as unsound, and the revelation will not be gradual. Where death is slow, this card is fast.

What matters is what falls. The Tower only takes what was built on a false foundation. A relationship held together by an assumption that was never true. A job whose security was imagined. A belief about yourself that has not been examined in years. If it was sound, it stays standing.

The lightning is truth arriving without permission. This is a card of revelation more than destruction, and the pain in it usually comes from finding out rather than from losing. Something you did not know is about to become impossible not to know.

It will be uncomfortable and it will be quick. That is genuinely better than the alternative, which is the same collapse arriving in ten years with more built on top of it.

There is freedom underneath. Everything the Tower takes was costing you something to maintain. What follows is built on ground you can actually see.

Let it fall. Do not go back in to save the furniture.

- Reversed -

Delayed collapse. Fear of change. Resistance. A narrow escape.

Reversed, the collapse is either postponed or already survived.

The first reading is avoidance. You can see the crack. You know the foundation is wrong, and you are propping it up, adding supports, arranging your life around not looking at it. Reversed, the Tower says the delay is possible and it is not free. The longer it stands, the further the fall.

The second reading is gentler and often accurate. A collapse that was expected and did not come, or came smaller than feared. A near miss. Reversed, this can mark someone who has already been through the worst of it and is standing in the aftermath wondering what happened.

There is also the internal version. The upheaval happening inside rather than in your circumstances. Nothing visible has changed and a belief has come down, which is the same event in a quieter register.

Reversed can indicate fear of a change that has not arrived and may not. Living in anticipation of the lightning.

The correction is to look at the foundation directly. If it is sound, stop bracing. If it is not, take it apart yourself while you still have some say in how.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

A sudden revelation or a sudden ending. Something coming to light that changes what you understood the relationship to be.

It is not always a break. Sometimes it is a truth told at last, and what stands afterwards is more real than what stood before.

Reversed

An upheaval avoided or delayed. A conversation both of you can feel coming and neither will start.

Reversed can also mark the period after. The worst has happened and you are still here, working out what is left.

- Career and Money -

Upright

Sudden change. A redundancy, a company failing, an exit that arrives without warning. Often the change you would not have made yourself.

With money, an unexpected cost or loss. The card asks whether the position was as secure as you believed.

Reversed

A crisis narrowly avoided, or one being postponed. If you can see the problem in the accounts or the business, deal with it before it deals with you.

- Health -

Upright

A sudden change or an unexpected diagnosis. Frightening at the time, and often the beginning of something being properly addressed at last. If something has been avoided or ignored, this is the card that asks you to face it.

Reversed

A sense that something needs attention. The card favours looking at it now, rather than waiting for it to announce itself.

- Yes or No -

Upright

No, not as it stands. Something here will not hold.

Reversed

No, and there is still time to change it deliberately.
