A great wheel turns at the centre of the card, and there is no person driving it.
This is the first card in the deck with no human figure at its centre. Everything until now has been someone acting, deciding or refusing. The Wheel does not require anyone.
Around its rim are letters and alchemical symbols, the elements and a word that can be read as fate. A serpent descends on one side. A jackal headed figure rises on the other. One thing goes down as another comes up, and neither of them chose the direction.
At the summit a sphinx sits with a sword, still while everything beneath it moves.
In the four corners of the sky are four winged creatures, each reading a book. A man, an eagle, a bull and a lion. They are the fixed signs of the zodiac and the four suits again, and they are studying rather than turning. The only stable thing in the picture is attention.
It is the tenth teacher, and it arrives directly after the Hermit for a reason. He went up the mountain alone to find his own answer, and the Wheel tells him that some of what happens to him was never his to decide.
