· The Ace Of Cups ·

MINOR ARCANA

Ace. The heart opening. Feeling before it has a name.

A hand comes out of a cloud holding a chalice, and the chalice is overflowing.

Five streams of water pour from it. More is coming out than the cup can hold, and none of it is being caught or saved. That excess is the card. This is not a measured feeling.

A dove descends toward the cup carrying a disc in its beak.

Something is being placed into the water from above rather than drawn up from below.

Beneath, a still lake covered with open water lilies. The overflow lands somewhere. Nothing spilled here is wasted.

The hand offers rather than reaches, the same as in the Ace of Wands.

What is being held out to you is available and it is not being pressed on you.

- Upright -

New love. Feeling. Openness. Emotional beginning.

The Ace of Cups upright is the heart opening.

Something is arriving that will be felt rather than decided. New love, a friendship deepening, a wave of tenderness toward someone or something, the sudden return of feeling after a numb stretch. Where this card appears, the feeling is genuine and the correct response is to let it in.

It is a card of receptivity, and that is harder than it sounds. The cup has to be held up to be filled. Where this appears, you are being asked to be open rather than careful, to accept the invitation, to say the affectionate thing without hedging it.

There is overflow in it. Whatever this is, there is more of it than you need, and the card suggests giving some away. Love in this suit multiplies by being spent.

Compassion sits here too, including toward yourself. If you have been hard on yourself for a long stretch, this card marks the moment that could ease.

It also carries creativity of the emotional kind. Work that comes from feeling rather than intention.

Let it in. You do not have to know what it is yet.

- Reversed -

Blocked feeling. Withheld love. Emptiness. Self neglect.

Reversed, the cup has been turned over or is being held back.

The most common reading is emotion blocked. The feeling is there and something is stopping it: fear, habit, an old hurt, a sense that opening again would cost too much. Reversed, this card does not blame you for that. It points out that the cup cannot be filled while it is upside down.

It can mean love withheld. Yours or someone else's. Affection that is felt and not expressed, or a person who is present and unavailable.

Reversed frequently indicates emptiness after depletion. Everyone else filled and nothing left over, and no practice at receiving anything back. If that fits, notice how long it has been since somebody looked after you.

There is also the reading of a relationship or a feeling that did not come to anything. Something opened and closed again. That is grief and it does not need managing quickly.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

The best beginning in the suit. New love, a connection opening, or the return of warmth to something that had gone flat.

If you are single, this often marks someone arriving. Be open rather than strategic.

Reversed

Feeling blocked, on either side. Someone unavailable, or your own guard up after being hurt.

Reversed can also mean a connection that opened and closed before it became anything.

- Career and Money -

Upright

Work that connects to something you actually care about. Strong for creative work and for anything involving people.

With money, generosity. Give some away and notice what happens.

Reversed

Work that has stopped meaning anything. Going through the motions.

With money, either holding too tightly or giving from a cup that is already empty.

- Health -

Upright

Emotional wellbeing lifting. Also a good time for anything involving water: swimming, bathing, drinking more of it.

Reversed

Low mood, or feeling flat and unable to say why. Worth telling someone rather than waiting for it to pass on its own.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Yes

Reversed

Not yet. Something is closed that needs opening first.
