· The Ace Of Swords ·

MINOR ARCANA

Ace. Clarity. The truth arriving all at once.

A hand comes out of a cloud gripping a sword, and the sword is upright and double edged.

It is held rather than offered. The Ace of Wands was extended, the Ace of Cups poured over, and this one is gripped hard at the hilt. Nothing about it is gentle.

The blade pierces a crown, and a wreath and a small palm frond hang from it.

Victory and sovereignty, taken by the blade rather than given.

The edges cut both ways. Whatever truth this is, it will cut you as readily as anyone else, and the card does not pretend otherwise.

Below, a range of jagged peaks. The mountains of the mind: cold, hard, clear, and nothing growing on them.

Points of light fall through the air on either side.

Something is being handed down.

- Upright -

Clarity. Truth. Breakthrough. Decision.

The Ace of Swords upright is the moment you see it.

The confusion clears, the fog lifts, and something you have been circling becomes suddenly obvious. Where this card appears, you either have that clarity now or you are about to, and it will not arrive gradually.

It is the card of the truth. Not a comfortable truth and not necessarily a welcome one. Simply the accurate one, which is more useful than the version you have been working with.

There is decision in it. Swords cut, and cutting means separating one thing from another: this from that, true from false, kept from released. Where this card appears, something needs deciding and the information required is now available.

It carries communication too. The exact word, the argument made properly, the thing finally said in a way that lands. This is a strong card for writing, for negotiation, and for the conversation you have been rehearsing.

The double edge is the caution. Truth spoken carelessly does damage, and being right is not the same as being kind.

Use the blade deliberately.

Say it. Clearly, and once.

- Reversed -

Confusion. Misinformation. Cruelty. Truth avoided.

Reversed, the blade is dull or it is being used badly.

The most common reading is confusion. No clarity available, conflicting information, a situation you cannot get a clean read on. Reversed, this card counsels waiting rather than deciding, because a decision made now would be made on bad data.

It can mean misinformation. Something you have been told is not accurate, or an assumption everyone is working from turns out to be wrong. Check the source.

Reversed frequently indicates truth used as a weapon. Honesty deployed to wound, the accurate observation made at the cruellest possible moment, being right in a way that costs more than being wrong would have. If that reading fits, the question is what you actually wanted from saying it.

There is also truth avoided. Something clearly visible that nobody will name, including you. Reversed, the Ace of

Swords is often the conversation everyone is dancing around rather than having.
