· The Eight Of Cups ·

MINOR ARCANA

Eight. Leaving. Walking away from what is not enough.

A cloaked figure walks away toward high ground, and eight cups stand stacked behind him on the shore.

The cups are not broken. Not spilled, not stolen, not lost. They are upright and in good order and he is leaving them anyway.

There is a gap in the stack. Five below and three above with a space where a ninth would sit, and that missing piece is why he is going. Everything is fine and something is absent, and he has stopped pretending otherwise.

He walks with a staff and his back to us. His face is not shown.

This is a private decision.

Above, a moon in eclipse. Night, and the light half hidden. He is leaving before it is fully clear where he is going.

Water runs between him and the cups. Already a crossing behind him.

- Upright -

Leaving. Walking away. Seeking. Disillusion.

The Eight of Cups upright is going, from something that was never bad enough to leave.

That is what makes this card difficult. Nothing has gone wrong. The job is fine, the relationship is fine, the life is fine, and there is a gap in it that will not fill, and you have known that for a while.

Where this card appears, the leaving is the correct decision. Not the easy one and not the justifiable one. Nobody will understand it properly and you will not be able to explain it well, because the thing you are leaving is not the problem. The absence in it is.

There is real courage in this card. Walking away from something adequate takes more nerve than escaping something terrible, because there is no crisis to point at.

It is also a card of searching. He is not just leaving, he is going toward high ground, and the going matters as much as the leaving.

Grief comes with it. Eight cups is a great deal to have built.

Go. You already know.

- Reversed -

Staying. Drifting back. Fear of leaving. Returning.

Reversed, he stays or he comes back.

The most common reading is staying too long. Knowing something is finished and remaining in it, from fear, from obligation, from not knowing what the alternative looks like. Reversed, this card asks how long you have been intending to go.

It can mean returning. Going back to something you left, and the card does not judge that. Sometimes the leaving was premature and sometimes the return is a mistake. Only you can tell which, and the test is usually whether anything has actually changed.

Reversed can indicate drifting rather than deciding. Neither in it nor out of it, keeping the option open, which costs more than either choice would.

There is also a reading of avoiding rather than leaving.

Walking away from every difficulty as a pattern rather than as a decision.
