· The Eight Of Swords ·

MINOR ARCANA

Eight. Restriction. The trap you can walk out of.

A blindfolded figure stands bound in a loose wrapping of cloth, with eight swords set upright in the ground around her.

Look at the binding. It is wrapped rather than tied, loose around the arms, and her hands are visible below it.

Nothing is knotted.

The swords stand in the ground around her but they do not enclose her.

There is a clear gap in front, wide open, and no sword behind her at all. She could walk out.

She is blindfolded, which is why she does not know that.

The ground is marshy and unpleasant underfoot.

Wet, cold, difficult to move through, which is part of why standing still feels reasonable.

A castle stands high on a hill behind her. Somebody built that.

It is a long way off but it is there.

- Upright -

Restriction. Feeling trapped. Powerlessness. Self limitation.

The Eight of Swords upright is being stuck in a situation you could leave.

The trapped feeling is real and the card takes it seriously. What it also says, plainly, is that the restriction is not what it appears. The bindings are loose, the swords have a gap in them, and nobody is holding her there.

This is the card of the story you are inside. Not enough money, not the right time, other people would be hurt, you have tried before, it is too late. Each of those may be partly true and none of them are the wall they feel like.

Where this card appears, the situation usually looks completely different once someone from outside describes it back to you. That is the practical instruction. Tell one person the whole thing and listen to what they say about it.

Notice also what you cannot see. The blindfold is the actual restriction here, not the swords. Whatever you have decided is impossible is worth testing rather than assuming.

Take one step.

There is more room than you think.

- Reversed -

Release. Freedom. Taking control. Deeper entrapment.

Reversed runs both ways and the difference is dramatic.

The first is release. The blindfold comes off, the wrapping falls away, and the situation that seemed impossible resolves quickly once it is actually looked at. Reversed, this card often marks somebody walking out of something they had been inside for years.

That release usually arrives with an ordinary realisation rather than a dramatic one.

Somebody says a plain thing and it becomes obvious.

The second reading is deeper entrapment. The restriction accepted so completely that it has stopped being questioned. Reversed, the swords do not need to enclose her because she has stopped trying to move.

There is also a reading about self blame. Recognising that you had more agency than you used, and turning that into another thing to be hard on yourself about.

That is not the point of the lesson.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

Feeling trapped in a relationship, or unable to leave one for reasons that would look smaller from outside.

Also staying because being alone seems worse. It usually is not.

Reversed

Getting out, or seeing the situation clearly at last. Also a restriction that has become permanent because nobody tested it.

- Career and Money -

Upright

Stuck in a role. No options visible, and there are usually more than you can currently see.

With money, feeling financially trapped. Get someone to look at the actual numbers with you.

Reversed

Options appearing, or leaving a situation you thought you could not leave.

- Health -

Upright

Anxiety creating limitation. Feeling unable rather than being unable. Speaking to someone about it usually widens the room.

Reversed

Restriction easing. If anxiety has been limiting your life for a long stretch, that is worth taking to a doctor.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Not as you currently see it.

Reversed

Yes. There is more room than you thought.
