· The Five Of Cups ·

MINOR ARCANA

Five. Grief. Looking at what was lost.

A figure stands in a long dark cloak with his head bowed, and three cups lie spilled on the ground before him.

Two cups stand upright behind him, still full. He has not turned around.

That is the entire card. Three lost, two remaining, and his whole attention on the ones that fell. The card does not tell him he is wrong to grieve. It simply shows what is behind him.

Beyond, a river runs and a narrow bridge crosses it toward a distant castle.

There is a way over. It is a small bridge and it is clearly drawn.

His cloak is heavy and black and covers him completely.

Grief as something worn.

- Upright -

Grief. Loss. Regret. Mourning what is gone.

The Five of Cups upright is the loss you are still looking at.

Something has gone. A relationship, an opportunity, a version of your life, a person. The card gives that its weight. This is a genuine loss and the grief is proportionate, and nothing in the card asks you to hurry.

What it does ask, gently, is that you notice what is still standing. Two cups behind him remain full. That is not a consolation offered instead of the grief. It is a fact that exists alongside it, and he cannot see it because of where he is facing.

There is regret in this card and often self blame. Turning something over, replaying it, examining what you could have done. Some of that is useful and most of it, past a point, is just re-injury.

The bridge is there. Nobody is telling him to cross it today.

Grieve properly.

Then, when you are ready and not before, turn around.

- Reversed -

Acceptance. Moving on. Forgiveness. Grief prolonged.

Reversed runs in two directions.

The first is recovery. Turning around at last, seeing what remains, accepting what happened. Reversed, this card often marks the point where grief loosens its hold and the person begins to look forward again. That shift is rarely dramatic. It usually arrives as an ordinary morning that is slightly easier than the last one.

There is forgiveness in it, of another person or of yourself. Setting down the account you have been keeping.

The second reading is grief that has become permanent. Loss held so long that it has turned into identity, an old hurt kept alive because letting it go would feel like losing it twice. Reversed, this card names that with some compassion and asks how long it has been.

If the loss is recent, this reversal is the first, and the second does not apply.
