· The Five Of Wands ·

MINOR ARCANA

Five. Conflict. Everyone talking at once.

Five figures struggle together at close quarters, each holding a wand raised.

Look at what is actually happening. Nobody is striking anyone. The wands cross at odd angles overhead and none of them connect. There is a great deal of movement and very little contact.

Nobody is winning. There is no leader in this card and no side. Five separate people each doing their own thing in the same small space.

The ground is bare and open. There is nothing here to fight over.

Whatever this is about, it is not about territory.

It could almost be play. That reading is genuinely available, and it is part of why this card is more tiring than it is dangerous.

- Upright -

Conflict. Competition. Friction. Disagreement.

The Five of Wands upright is noise.

Everyone wants something slightly different and everyone is saying so at the same time. Meetings that go nowhere, families at cross purposes, a project with too many opinions in it. This is friction rather than war, and the exhaustion comes from the volume rather than the stakes.

It is a card of competition, and often healthy competition. Other people are going for the same thing you are. That is not hostility, it is a crowded field, and the card asks you to compete rather than complain about the crowd.

There is disorganisation in it. Five people, no structure, no agreement about what they are even doing. Where this appears at work, the problem is usually process rather than personalities.

The useful reading is this: nothing is being decided while everyone is swinging.

Someone has to step out of the scrum and name what is actually being disagreed about.

Do not take it personally. Almost none of this is about you.

- Reversed -

Avoidance. Resolution. Inner conflict. Suppressed disagreement.

Reversed runs two ways.

The first is resolution. The noise stops, the disagreement resolves, people find their positions and the tension goes out of it. Reversed, this card is often a relief.

The second is avoidance, and it is the more common. The conflict is real and nobody will name it. Everyone polite, nothing said, the disagreement running underneath every conversation. Reversed, this is the more damaging version because it does not exhaust itself the way open conflict does.

There is also inner conflict. The five figures as parts of yourself, all wanting different things, none of them willing to concede. Reversed, that argument is happening inside rather than in the room.

Sometimes it means walking away from a fight that was not worth having.

Only you can tell whether it is that or avoidance.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

Friction. Bickering, cross purposes, a relationship where you keep having the same argument in different clothes.

If you are single, competition. Someone with other interest, or a crowded field.

Reversed

Either a disagreement resolving, or one being avoided entirely. Look at which.

Reversed can also mean tension nobody will name, which tends to leak out sideways.

- Career and Money -

Upright

A competitive environment, or a team pulling in different directions. Also job applications and pitches where you are one of many.

With money, competing demands on the same limited funds.

Reversed

Conflict at work being avoided rather than addressed. Or a competitive situation resolving in your favour.

With money, a decision about priorities that keeps being deferred.

- Health -

Upright

Stress from friction rather than from workload. Tension carried in the jaw, shoulders and sleep.

Reversed

Tension eased, or stress being suppressed rather than dealt with.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Not yet. Too much is unsettled.

Reversed

Maybe. It depends whether the disagreement has actually resolved.
