· The Four Of Swords ·

MINOR ARCANA

Four. Rest. Stopping before you are made to.

A figure lies at full length on a raised stone tomb with his hands joined, and three swords hang on the wall above him.

He is not dead. His hands are joined in prayer and his face is composed, and the card is a resting figure rather than a body.

Three swords hang above him, pointed down but fixed to the wall. Not in him. Held out of the way.

The fourth sword lies flat along the side of the tomb beneath him. Set down. The one he was carrying is no longer being carried.

Behind, a stained window shows a small figure receiving something. Somewhere sacred, somewhere quiet, and light coming through it.

Everything in this card is horizontal.

After the Three, which had nothing to stand on, this one is entirely at rest.

- Upright -

Rest. Recovery. Retreat. Stillness.

The Four of Swords upright is stopping.

After the Three, this is the only sensible card. Something has taken a great deal out of you and the instruction is to withdraw and recover, which is not laziness and does not require justification.

It is a card of deliberate retreat. Not collapse. Choosing to step out for a while: taking the leave, going quiet, cancelling the thing, sleeping properly for a fortnight. The swords are on the wall rather than in his hands, which means the difficulty still exists and he has put it down for now.

There is recuperation in it, physical and mental both. Where this card appears after illness, difficulty or a long stretch of effort, it says the recovery is available if you actually take it.

The stillness is active. This is not doing nothing. It is the specific work of letting a mind settle, and it does not happen while you are still checking.

Stop. It will all still be there, and you will be better equipped for it.

- Reversed -

Restlessness. Burnout. Returning too soon. Refusing to stop.

Reversed, the rest is refused or is over before it worked.

The most common reading is refusing to stop. Knowing you need to rest and continuing anyway, from obligation or from the sense that stopping would mean falling behind. Reversed, this card asks what you think would actually happen if you took a week.

It can mean burnout arriving because that rest was never taken. Reversed, the Four of Swords is what the upright card was trying to prevent.

There is also returning too soon. Going back to work, to a situation, or to full pace before the recovery had finished. This tends to cost double.

Reversed sometimes means the opposite and welcome reading: coming out of a period of rest, ready to re-engage.

Rest embraced rather than refused.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

A pause. Space needed, in the relationship or from dating altogether. Not a break-up. A rest.

If you are single, a deliberate stretch of not looking.

Reversed

Rushing back into something before you have recovered from the last one. Or a relationship where neither person is getting any peace.

- Career and Money -

Upright

Take the leave. A pause between roles, a project shelved, deliberate quiet before the next stage.

With money, no moves. Hold the position and rest.

Reversed

Working through exhaustion, or returning from leave still tired. Also restlessness at a time when nothing is moving.

- Health -

Upright

Rest and recovery, and the card is unambiguous about it. Sleep, quiet, fewer inputs. Convalescence after illness.

Reversed

Not resting when rest is needed. If exhaustion has been building for months, speak to a doctor rather than pushing on.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Not yet. Rest first.

Reversed

No. You are running on nothing.
