· The King Of Cups ·

MINOR ARCANA

King. Composure. Steady in moving water.

A crowned king sits on a stone throne set upon the surface of moving water, holding a cup in one hand and a short sceptre in the other.

The throne floats. The sea is rough around him and the throne is not anchored to anything, and he is sitting on it perfectly still.

A fish leaps from the water on one side. A ship sails on the other. The unconscious and the enterprise, both in motion, and neither of them disturbing him.

He wears a fish amulet at his throat. He carries the sign of the suit rather than being carried by it.

His feet do not touch the water. Everyone else in this suit stands on the shore or beside it.

He is out on the sea itself and staying dry.

Nothing in his posture is tense.

This is composure, and composure only counts when the conditions are difficult.

- Upright -

Composure. Emotional mastery. Wisdom. Steady support.

The King of Cups upright is being unshaken while everything around you moves.

He is the calm one in the crisis. Not because he feels less, but because he has been feeling things for long enough to know they pass, and that steadiness is what other people come to him for.

Where this card appears, you are being asked to hold your composure and let it do the work. Not suppression. The specific quality of staying level when a situation is not level, which changes the temperature of a room without anyone being told to calm down.

There is wisdom in it, and it is earned rather than clever. He has been in this water. That is why he can sit on it.

As a person, this is someone tolerant, diplomatic, generous with counsel and difficult to provoke: often the one people bring their problems to. Frequently found in medicine, law, counselling, and anywhere a steady adult is required.

The caution is subtle. A man who never appears troubled may have simply become very good at not showing it, and the sea beneath him is genuinely rough.

Stay steady. It is more useful than being right.

- Reversed -

Suppression. Volatility. Manipulation. Cold detachment.

Reversed, the composure is a performance or has broken.

The most common reading is suppression. Everything managed, nothing expressed, feeling controlled so completely that it has stopped being available even to you. Reversed, this card asks what it costs to be the person who never seems to struggle.

It can mean the opposite: volatility. The calm breaking, moods running the situation, someone whose weather everyone else has to track. Reversed, this is the sea coming over the throne.

Reversed frequently indicates emotional manipulation of the controlled kind. Warmth used strategically, withdrawal used as punishment, someone who never raises their voice and always gets their way.

This is quieter than the Devil and it works on the same principle.

There is also cold detachment.

Composure that has become distance, a person present and unreachable.
