· The King Of Pentacles ·

MINOR ARCANA

King. Mastery. Everything built and holding.

A crowned king sits at ease on a throne carved with bulls' heads, a sceptre in one hand and a disc resting on his knee.

He is not holding the disc. It sits on his knee, unattended, and he is not concerned about it. Nobody else in this suit is that relaxed about a pentacle.

His robe is patterned all over with grapes and vines. He is wearing the harvest rather than counting it.

Vines grow thickly around the throne, up over the arms, established and untrimmed. He has been sitting here a long time.

A castle wall stands behind him. Built, finished, and no longer something he thinks about.

His foot rests on a carved bull's head.

Taurus, the fixed earth sign: slow, immovable, and extremely difficult to shift.

- Upright -

Mastery. Wealth. Stability. Provision.

The King of Pentacles upright is having built it and now simply running it.

Everything in this suit has been leading here. The Ace's opportunity, the Eight's practice, the Nine's independence, the Ten's legacy, all of it arriving at a person who has made something substantial and holds it without effort.

He is the wealth of the deck and the settled kind. Not a windfall, not a good year. A position built over decades that would survive a bad one.

There is real generosity in him, of the practical sort. He provides. Where this card appears, somebody is being supported, and it may well be you doing the supporting.

Mastery is the theme. Not cleverness, and not luck. Long competence in a material field, the kind that makes hard things look ordinary.

As a person, this is someone established, unhurried and reliable at scale: a good employer, a good adviser, comfortable with money and unbothered by it.

Difficult to impress and very difficult to move.

Build well and hold it lightly. The disc on the knee is the lesson here.

- Reversed -

Greed. Materialism. Rigidity. Insecurity beneath the wealth.

Reversed, the mastery has narrowed into possession.

The most common reading is materialism. Worth measured entirely in what is owned, success counted rather than lived, a life arranged around accumulation with nothing else in it. Reversed, this card asks what the money is actually for.

It can mean greed, or the corrupt use of a strong position. Advantage taken because it can be, terms imposed because the other side has no leverage.

Reversed frequently indicates rigidity. A person who was right for a long time and has stopped being able to hear anything new, or a business run the same way past the point where it works.

There is also the quieter reading: insecurity beneath the wealth. Enough to be safe several times over but never actually feeling safe, usually rooted in a period of genuine scarcity a long time ago.

Reversed, that fear is worth naming rather than feeding.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

Someone established, generous and steady. A relationship with real security in it.

Also providing for the people you love, and being able to.

Reversed

A relationship where money is power, or someone who provides materially and little else.

Reversed can also mean valuing a partner for their position.

Upright

The strongest card in the deck for material success. Business ownership, senior authority, wealth built and holding.

A controlling employer, or a business run rigidly. Also success that has cost everything else.

With money, greed, or anxiety that no amount will resolve.

- Health -

Upright

Robust. Good resources and the sense to use them. Get the proper care rather than the cheap version.

Reversed

Health neglected in favour of work, or the physical cost of years of pressure.

- Yes or No -

Yes.

Reversed

No, not on these terms.
