· The Knight Of Pentacles ·

MINOR ARCANA

Knight. Reliability. The one who finishes.

An armoured rider sits on a heavy black horse standing completely still in a ploughed field, holding out a single disc.

The horse is stationary. All four hooves on the ground, head down, not going anywhere. Every other knight in the deck is charging, rearing or walking, and this one has stopped.

It is a workhorse rather than a warhorse. Broad, heavy, built to pull rather than to run.

He holds the disc out and looks at it steadily. Not offering it to anyone. Considering it.

A sprig of oak sits on his helm and on the horse's brow. Slow growing, long lived, hard.

Behind him the field is ploughed in even rows to the horizon.

Somebody has done a great deal of methodical work here.

- Upright -

Reliability. Routine. Thoroughness. Slow progress.

The Knight of Pentacles upright is doing it properly and doing it all the way.

He is the least exciting card in the deck and the one you would want on your side. Where this card appears, the situation calls for method rather than inspiration: turn up, follow the process, finish what was started.

He is slow, and the card treats that as a feature. Nothing he begins is abandoned. He will still be working on this in a year, at the same pace, and it will be done.

There is routine in it. The same hours, the same standards, the boring repetition that produces results while more interesting people are starting their fourth new thing.

As a person, this is someone dependable, patient, thorough and genuinely dull in the best sense: a good employee, a good partner, a poor source of surprises. If somebody in your life is like this, notice that reliability is rarer than charm.

The caution is stagnation. A horse that has stopped can stay stopped, and this knight can mistake caution for diligence.

Keep going at your own pace.

You will finish, which most people do not.

- Reversed -

Stagnation. Boredom. Perfectionism. Stubbornness.

Reversed, the slowness has become stillness.

The most common reading is stagnation. The routine that stopped producing, the job that has become identical every day for years, the horse standing in the field with nobody riding it. Reversed, this card asks whether you are being steady or simply stuck.

It can mean boredom. Work or a relationship that is reliable and lifeless, and the card is honest that reliability alone is not sufficient.

Reversed frequently indicates perfectionism and its cousin, delay. Preparing indefinitely, refining, waiting for conditions. Also refusing to move on something because it is not yet flawless.

There is also stubbornness.

A method held long after it stopped working, or an unwillingness to consider a different way of doing it.
