· The Knight Of Swords ·

MINOR ARCANA

Knight. Charge. Straight at it, at speed.

An armoured rider charges at full gallop on a white horse with his sword raised overhead.

This is the fastest card in the deck. All four hooves are off the ground and nothing about the picture is under control.

He is going in a straight line. No manoeuvre, no flank, no consideration of terrain.

Directly at whatever it is.

Behind him the trees are bent low and the cloud is driven hard across the sky. The whole landscape is being pushed the same way he is going, or he is generating the weather himself.

His visor is up. He can see, and he is not looking at the ground.

The sword is raised rather than levelled.

Ready to strike rather than to fend anything off.

- Upright -

Speed. Directness. Ambition. Charging in.

The Knight of Swords upright is going straight at it.

Something needs doing and this card says do it now, directly, without the diplomatic preamble. Where this appears, hesitation is costing more than bluntness would.

He is intellect at full speed. Quick thinking, fast talking, arguments made at pace and usually won. There is real capability here, and where this card appears you are probably sharper right now than the people around you.

There is courage in the directness. He says the thing. He does not manage the room or soften the message, and in a situation clogged with politeness that is genuinely valuable.

The cost is everything he rides past. He is not looking at the ground, which means he will not notice what he damages on the way through, and he tends to arrive somewhere at speed with no plan for what happens next.

As a person, this is someone brilliant, blunt, impatient and exhausting: excellent in a crisis, difficult in a marriage.

Go, and expect to apologise for something afterwards.

- Reversed -

Recklessness. Aggression. Burnout. All talk.

Reversed, the charge has gone wrong.

The most common reading is recklessness with consequences. Acting without thinking, damage done at speed, a decision made in an afternoon that will take a year to unpick. Reversed, this card arrives after the fact.

It can mean aggression. Directness turned harsh, argument for its own sake, someone who is always attacking something. Reversed, the sword is being swung rather than carried.

Reversed frequently indicates burnout. Riding at that pace is unsustainable and this is the point where the horse stops. Sudden collapse after a long sprint.

There is also the all talk reading.

Great conviction, forceful opinions, and nothing actually done.

The charge that never leaves the stable.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

Fast and direct. Someone who pursues without ambiguity, or a conversation that needs having plainly.

Not a gentle card. Honest, and moving quickly.

Reversed

Words used carelessly. An argument that went further than intended, or someone whose bluntness has become unkindness.

Reversed can also mean intensity that burned out fast.

- Career and Money -

Upright

Decisive action. Cutting through, making the case, moving on something before the window closes.

With money, a fast decision. Make sure the speed is warranted.

Reversed

Acting too fast, or conflict at work escalating. Also a project driven hard and abandoned.

With money, a rushed decision worth reviewing.

- Health -

Upright

High energy and mental sharpness. Watch that the pace is sustainable.

Reversed

Burnout, or injury from pushing too hard. Slow down before you are slowed down.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Yes, and quickly.

Reversed

No. Too fast, or too forceful.
