· The Nine Of Swords ·

MINOR ARCANA

Nine. Anxiety. The hours before dawn.

A figure sits upright in bed with both hands covering the face, and nine swords hang in a row on the wall behind.

The swords are on the wall. Not in her, not falling, not held by anyone. Mounted, in a neat row, going nowhere.

She has woken and sat up. This is the middle of the night and she is alone with it.

The coverlet across her lap is worked with roses and with figures from the zodiac. Ordinary life and the turning of the year, both continuing, both entirely irrelevant at three in the morning.

The bed is carved and comfortable.

She is safe. Nothing in this room is threatening her.

The card is completely still.

Nothing is happening in it at all, which is the truthful thing about this particular suffering.

- Upright -

Anxiety. Sleeplessness. Fear. Rumination.

The Nine of Swords upright is the worry that arrives at night.

Everything is worse now than it will be at eight in the morning, and you know that, and it does not help. Where this card appears, you are carrying something that has got into your sleep.

The swords on the wall are the important detail. They are not attacking her. They are mounted like trophies, arranged and displayed, which is what a mind does with fears: keeps them, orders them, goes over them.

Most of what is on that wall has not happened. The Nine of Swords is anticipation rather than event, the imagined version of a thing being reliably worse than the thing. That does not make the suffering less real, and it does mean it is not evidence.

There is shame in this card too, often. Sitting up alone with it, not telling anyone, embarrassed to be this frightened about something that will sound small out loud.

Say it out loud to someone.

It shrinks when it leaves your head, every time, and it will not shrink while it stays in there.

- Reversed -

Recovery. Speaking it. Relief. Despair deepening.

Reversed, the night either breaks or deepens.

The most common reading is relief. The worry lifting, sleep returning, a feared thing turning out to be manageable or not happening at all. Reversed, this card often marks the morning after a long bad stretch.

It frequently arrives when something has been told. Spoken aloud, taken to a friend or a professional, brought into daylight. That is the mechanism by which this card turns.

The second reading is deepening.

Anxiety that has been carried alone for so long it has become the normal condition, or despair that has settled. Reversed, this is the more serious version.

If that is where you are, this is a card that asks for other people rather than more enduranceon your own.

Tell someone today, and if there is nobody, look to The Mirror™, a doctor or a helpline.

- Love -

Upright

Worry about a relationship, usually running ahead of anything that has happened. Also lying awake over something unsaid.

Ask the question. The imagined answer is almost always worse.

Reversed

Relief after a fear, or a worry finally spoken. Also anxiety that has begun to damage the relationship itself.

- Career and Money -

Upright

Work worry keeping you awake. Often disproportionate, and occasionally accurate.

With money, financial anxiety at night. Look at the real numbers in daylight with someone else present.

Reversed

Pressure easing, or a fear proving unfounded. Also stress that has run long enough to need addressing properly.

- Health -

Upright

Sleeplessness and anxiety, and the physical toll of both. This is worth taking to a doctor rather than enduring.

Reversed

Improving, or worsening. If you have been struggling for a long time, please speak to your doctor or a crisis line. You do not have to manage it by yourself.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Not from here. You are not seeing it accurately at present.

Reversed

Yes, once the worst of it lifts.
