· The Page Of Pentacles ·

MINOR ARCANA

Page. Study. Beginning something that will take years.

A young figure stands in a ploughed field holding a single disc up in both hands, looking at it closely.

He is studying it. Not admiring, not celebrating. Examining the thing he has been given as though he intends to understand how it works.

Both hands hold it. Careful with it, the way you are careful with something new and valuable.

The field around him is ploughed and empty. The ground has been prepared and nothing has been sown yet.

A grove of trees stands in the distance and low hills beyond. Nothing has grown here recently.

His feet are planted flat on the earth.

Of all the Pages, this one is the least likely to be swayed.

- Upright -

Study. New venture. Diligence. A practical beginning.

The Page of Pentacles upright is starting something you intend to take seriously.

A course, a trade, a business, a saving plan, a skill you have decided to actually learn. Where this card appears, the beginning is modest and the intention is long, which is the correct combination for anything in this suit.

He is the student of the deck. Not the quick learner, the diligent one: the person who reads the manual, does the exercises, and is still doing it in eighteen months. That is the least glamorous form of talent and it beats almost everything else.

There is groundedness in it. Where the other Pages are enthusiastic, dreamy or restless, this one is practical. He wants to know what it costs, how long it takes, and whether it will work.

As news, this is a modest material beginning. A small offer, a first payment, an opportunity that is not impressive yet.

As a person, this is someone young, serious, reliable and slower than everyone around them, who will quietly be further along than all of them in five years.

Start small. Study it properly.

Give it time.

- Reversed -

Procrastination. Impracticality. Wasted potential. Poor foundations.

Reversed, the study has not started or is not sticking.

The most common reading is procrastination. The course bought and not begun, the plan made and not started, the intention held for months without a first step. Reversed, this card asks what the first hour would actually involve.

It can mean impracticality. Plans with no numbers in them, ambition without a budget or a timeline. Reversed, the missing element is usually arithmetic.

Reversed frequently indicates wasted potential. Genuine capability going undeveloped, from lack of application or lack of belief. Both are fixable and neither fixes itself.

There is also the reading of poor foundations.

Something begun without the groundwork, which will need redoing.
