· The Queen Of Swords ·

MINOR ARCANA

Queen. Clarity. Perception earned the hard way.

A crowned queen sits upright on a stone throne with a sword held vertical in one hand and the other hand raised, open.

Both hands are doing something. The sword is up and steady, and the open palm faces out. Judgement in one hand and receiving in the other, at the same time.

Her throne is carved with a winged cherub and with butterflies. Transformation, worked into the seat she sits on. She was not always like this.

One bird flies in the clear sky above her, and a bank of cloud sits low behind the throne.

The weather has passed and she is in the clear air after it.

Her expression is level. Not cold, not warm. Assessing.

Her posture is completely upright.

Nobody is going to move her.

- Upright -

Perception. Honesty. Independence. Clear judgement.

The Queen of Swords upright is seeing accurately.

She reads a situation for what it is rather than what it presents as, and she does it quickly. Where this card appears, you are being asked to trust your own assessment over the version you are being offered.

Her clarity came from somewhere. The butterflies on the throne and the cloud behind her say she has been through something, and that is why she can see. This is not natural coolness. It is perception earned at a cost, and the cost is why she does not romanticise anything.

She is honest, sometimes uncomfortably. She will tell you the true thing rather than the kind thing, and people who want reassurance find her difficult while people who want the truth find her invaluable.

There is independence in it. She does not require agreement, company or approval to hold a position.

As a person, this is a woman who has been through it and come out sharp: direct, perceptive, unsentimental, extremely good company if you are honest with her, and impossible to lie to.

See it clearly. Say it plainly.

Do not apologise for either.

- Reversed -

Coldness. Bitterness. Cruelty. Guardedness.

Reversed, the clarity has turned cold.

The most common reading is bitterness. Perception that has curdled into cynicism, the difficult experience becoming a lens applied to everything and everyone. Reversed, she expects the worst and is therefore rarely surprised and rarely close to anyone.

It can mean cruelty. Honesty deployed to wound, the precise observation used because it will land hardest. She knows exactly where to put the sword, and reversed she uses that.

Reversed frequently indicates over-guardedness. Independence that has become isolation, self-sufficiency that has stopped being a strength and become a wall. Not needing anybody is a defensible position and it is a lonely one.

There is also the reading of overthinking.

Analysing a situation past the point of usefulness, dissecting a relationship rather than being in it.
