· The Seven Of Cups ·

MINOR ARCANA

Seven. Illusion. Too many things to want.

A figure stands with his back to us looking up at seven cups suspended in cloud, and each cup holds something different.

A face. A veiled figure. A jewel. A wreath. A dragon. A serpent. A castle.

Love, mystery, wealth, victory, danger, temptation and a whole life, all floating at eye level and all equally available.

He is a silhouette. There is no detail on him at all, which is unusual in this deck.

Whoever is looking at these could be anyone.

The cups sit in cloud rather than on ground. Nothing here has weight.

Nothing has been chosen and nothing has cost anything yet.

- Upright -

Choices. Fantasy. Illusion. Too many options.

The Seven of Cups upright is the paralysis of possibility.

Several things are available and all of them look good from here. A career direction, a person, a place to live, a version of your life. Where this card appears, the difficulty is not scarcity. It is that everything is still theoretical, and theoretical things are always more attractive than real ones.

There is illusion in it. Some of what is on offer is not what it appears. The wreath is victory and the dragon is not, and from this distance they are the same size. The card asks which of these you have actually examined rather than admired.

Fantasy sits here too, and it is not always a fault. Imagination is where things begin. It becomes a problem at the point where imagining replaces choosing, and the card usually arrives just after that line has been crossed.

The instruction is unglamorous. Take one down out of the cloud.

Put it on the ground where it can be weighed, and find out what it actually is.

Choose. Everything stays perfect while it remains hypothetical, and none of it is yours until it is real.

- Reversed -

Clarity. Decision made. Disillusion. Overwhelm.

Reversed, the cloud clears.

The most common reading is clarity arriving. The options resolve, one of them becomes obviously right, or several of them fall away for reasons outside your control. Reversed, this card is usually a relief after a long stretch of not being able to decide.

It can mean a decision finally made. Committing to one thing and accepting the loss of the others, which is the actual work of choosing and the part people avoid.

There is disillusion here too. Seeing that something you wanted was not what you believed it to be. That stings and it is better than continuing to want it.

Reversed can also indicate overwhelm rather than clarity, the options multiplying rather than narrowing.

If that fits, reduce the field deliberately.

Take three off the table without agonising over them.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

Idealising someone. A person imagined rather than known, or several options with none of them real yet.

If you are dating, too many possibilities and no depth in any of them.

Reversed

Seeing someone clearly at last, for better or worse. Also choosing one person and stopping the browsing.

- Career and Money -

Upright

Too many directions. Several plans, none begun. Also an opportunity that looks better than it is.

With money, a scheme that sounds too good. Examine it properly before committing.

Reversed

A decision made, or an option revealed as unrealistic. Both are progress.

With money, clarity about what is actually affordable.

- Health -

Upright

Too many approaches tried at once, none consistently. Pick one and give it three months.

Reversed

Clarity about what actually works for your body. Follow it.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Not yet. You do not have enough real information.

Reversed

Yes, now that you can see it clearly.
