· The Six Of Pentacles ·

MINOR ARCANA

Six. Giving. The scales in someone's hand.

A merchant holds a balanced scale in one hand and drops coins into the palm of a kneeling figure with the other, while a second kneels beside them.

He is standing and they are kneeling. That difference is the card. This is generosity and it is not between equals.

The scale is in his hand. He decides what is fair, he weighs it, and both of them wait for the result.

He gives to one and not the other, or not yet.

Nothing in the picture explains why one is receiving first.

His robe is fine. Theirs are not.

The giving is genuine.

There is no cruelty in this card at all.

There is simply somebody above and somebody below, and coins moving downward.

- Upright -

Generosity. Giving and receiving. Charity. Balance.

The Six of Pentacles upright is help changing hands.

Something is being given. Money, time, opportunity, a recommendation, a kindness that costs the giver less than it is worth to the receiver. Where this card appears, you are on one side of that exchange and it is worth knowing which.

If you are giving, the card supports it. Generosity that circulates rather than accumulates, help offered because you are currently able to offer it.

If you are receiving, the instruction is to actually accept it. People who are good at giving are frequently terrible at this, and refusing help is not the virtue it feels like.

The scales are the part worth watching. He decides the amount, which means the exchange carries power in it. Where this card appears in a relationship, notice who holds the scale, because generosity that creates obligation is a different transaction from generosity that does not.

Give what you can. Take what is offered.

Watch the terms.

- Reversed -

Strings attached. Debt. Uneven giving. Withheld help.

Reversed, the exchange has power in it that nobody is naming.

The most common reading is generosity with conditions. Help given and quietly counted, a gift that becomes leverage, support that has to be repaid in compliance. Reversed, this card names it plainly.

It can mean uneven giving in a relationship or a friendship. One person consistently the giver and the other consistently the receiver, until the roles have hardened into identities that neither of them chose.

Reversed frequently indicates debt. Money owed, or a favour that has never been squared. Also the discomfort of owing somebody who reminds you.

There is also help withheld.

Somebody able to assist who does not, or your own refusal to give when you could.
