· The Six Of Swords ·

MINOR ARCANA

Six. Passage. Moving toward calmer water.

A ferryman poles a low boat across water, carrying a seated figure and a child, with six swords standing upright through the floor of the boat.

The swords came with them. They are driven through the hull, which should sink the boat and does not.

Whatever this difficulty is, it is being carried rather than left behind, and the boat still floats.

The water tells the story. Behind the boat it is choppy and broken. Ahead of it, on the far side, it is completely still. They are already halfway across.

The seated figure is covered by a cloak and does not look up. The child leans against her.

Neither of them is steering.

The ferryman stands and works. Someone else is doing the moving.

The far shore is visible. Low and quiet and reachable.

- Upright -

Transition. Leaving. Recovery. Calmer water ahead.

The Six of Swords upright is the crossing.

You are leaving something difficult and you are not there yet. The middle of the journey, past the worst of it and not yet arrived, which is a specific and underrated stage that this card takes seriously.

It is a card of necessary departure. A move, a separation, a change of circumstances, sometimes literally travel. Where this appears, the going is right even where it is sad, and the card is clear that things get calmer from here.

The swords travelling with you are the important detail. You do not leave a difficulty behind by moving away from it. It comes along, and it stops sinking you, which is what recovery actually looks like.

There is help in it. Somebody is doing the poling. Where this card appears, you are being carried a little, by a person or a service or a stretch of luck, and it is worth letting that happen rather than insisting on rowing.

Keep going.

The water ahead is genuinely calmer than the water behind.

- Reversed -

Stuck. Unable to leave. Returning. Baggage.

Reversed, the crossing has stalled.

The most common reading is being unable to leave. The situation is finished and the departure keeps not happening, held up by practicalities, money, other people, or fear of what is on the far side. Reversed, this card asks what is actually preventing it.

It can mean carrying too much. The swords in the boat are unavoidable and there may be more than the boat can hold. Reversed, some of this could be put down before the crossing.

There is also the reading of going back. Returning to the shore you left, and only you can say whether that is a mistake or a correction.

Reversed sometimes indicates a transition that has taken far longer than it should have, and is still not complete.

Ongoing, exhausting, and no far shore in sight yet.
