· The Ten Of Wands ·

MINOR ARCANA

Ten. Burden. Too much carried alone.

A figure walks bent forward under an armful of wands, and you cannot see his face.

That is the first thing. Every other card in this suit shows a face, or a back with the head up. Here the load is high enough and heavy enough that the person has disappeared behind it.

He is carrying them all at once, gathered awkwardly against his chest. There is no bundle, no strap, no sensible way of doing this. He has simply picked up everything and set off.

The wands are the same wands. One was offered in the Ace, planted in the Three, raised in celebration in the Four, carried in procession in the Six. Now all ten are in his arms and none of them are being used for anything.

Ahead, a village. He is close.

That is the cruelty of the card: he is nearly home and he cannot see it, because he is looking at the ground.

- Upright -

Burden. Overwork. Responsibility. Nearly there.

The Ten of Wands upright is carrying too much.

Something has accumulated. Not one crisis, a hundred obligations, each of them reasonable on its own, taken on one at a time until the total became unmanageable. Where this card appears, the weight is real and it is largely self assigned.

That is the useful part. Nobody put these wands in his arms. He picked them up, and he has not put any of them down, and it has probably not occurred to him that he could. This card asks which of these are genuinely yours to carry.

There is responsibility in it, and often the honourable kind. Looking after people, holding a business together, being the one who does not drop things. The card does not call that a fault. It points out that it is not sustainable at this volume.

You are nearer the end than you can see. The village is right there. But finishing this stretch will not fix it, because the pattern will refill the arms with new wands the moment these are set down.

Put some of it down. Ask what would actually happen.

- Reversed -

Release. Delegation. Collapse. Refusing to let go.

Reversed runs two ways and they are opposite.

The first is release. Setting the load down, delegating, resigning, saying no, admitting the thing cannot be done alone. Reversed, this card is often the relief of finally handing something over, and it usually arrives later than it should have.

The second is collapse. Carrying past the point of capacity until the load comes down on its own. Reversed, this is the version where the choice gets taken out of your hands, and it is what the upright card was warning about.

There is also refusal. Being offered help and not taking it, because handing it over would mean admitting you could not manage.

Reversed, that pride is costing more than the work.

Sometimes it means carrying something that was never yours. Another person's responsibility, a family expectation, an obligation you inherited without agreeing to. Reversed, the question is whose wands these actually are.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

One person carrying the relationship. Doing the emotional work, the planning, the remembering, and calling it love rather than labour.

If you are single, being too tired from everything else to have anything left for this.

Reversed

Either putting the load down and sharing it properly, or a relationship reaching the point where one person cannot carry it further.

Reversed can also mean walking away from something that had become entirely obligation.

- Career and Money -

Upright

Overwork. Too many responsibilities, none of them dropped, most of them taken on voluntarily. Common for founders and for anyone senior enough to be asked.

With money, obligations stacking up. Multiple commitments each affordable alone.

Reversed

Delegating, resigning, or reducing scope. Also burnout arriving because none of that happened in time.

With money, releasing a commitment that had become a weight.

- Health -

Upright

Strain from carrying too much. Typically shows in the back, shoulders and sleep. Reduce the load rather than increasing the tolerance.

Reversed

Either recovery beginning as pressure eases, or exhaustion arriving all at once. If depletion has been building for a long while, speak to a doctor rather than pushing through.

- Yes or No -

Upright

No. You are carrying enough.

Reversed

Yes, if something else is put down first.
