· The Three Of Cups ·

MINOR ARCANA

Three. Friendship. Being glad in company.

Three figures stand together in a close circle, raising their cups until they meet overhead.

The cups touch. That is the whole gesture and it only works because all three lift at once.

They wear garlands of flowers and their arms are around each other. This is physical closeness, easy and unremarkable, the kind that exists between people who have known each other a long while.

At their feet, ripe fruit and vines. The harvest is in and it is being enjoyed rather than counted.

Nobody is at the centre. Two of them would be a pair and three is a circle, which is a different thing entirely.

The Two was intimacy. This is belonging.

- Upright -

Friendship. Celebration. Community. Shared joy.

The Three of Cups upright is good company.

Something is being celebrated with the people who actually know you. A gathering, a piece of good news shared, a reunion, an ordinary night that turns out to be the one you remember.

It is the card of chosen family. Not the people you are obliged to, the people you would call first. Where this appears, that circle matters more to your current situation than you may be giving it credit for.

There is genuine joy in it and no complication attached. Very few cards in the deck are simply happy.

This is one of them.

It also carries collaboration. Three people making something together, each of them lifting at the same time. Creative work with others goes well under this card.

If you have been alone with something lately, this card is the instruction.

Tell someone. Go to the thing. Answer the message you have been leaving.

- Reversed -

Isolation. Gossip. Overindulgence. Third parties.

Reversed, the circle has closed you out or has turned on itself.

The most common reading is isolation. Withdrawn from people, declining the invitations, alone in a way that started as preference and has become a habit. Reversed, this card asks how long it has been and suggests you accept the next one.

It can mean gossip. The circle used against somebody rather than for them. Being talked about, or being part of a group that talks. Neither is comfortable to look at.

Reversed can indicate overindulgence, and it is the specific social kind. Celebration that has become escape, drinking that has become the point rather than the accompaniment.

If that reading lands, it is worth sitting with rather than skimming past.

There is also the third party reading.

Someone outside a pair affecting it, a friendship complicated by a new relationship, or a group of two that has become an awkward three.
