· The Three Of Pentacles ·

MINOR ARCANA

Three. Craft. Skill recognised, work shared.

A stonemason stands on a bench working at the arch of a cathedral wall, while two figures below hold up a plan and consult him.

He is up on the bench and they are on the ground, and he is the one holding the tools. The card puts the person doing the work above the people commissioning it.

They have brought the drawing to him. Not instructions handed down. A consultation, with the plan held open between them.

Three discs are set into the stonework of the arch above. Already built in, already part of the structure.

This is not proposed work, it is work under way.

They are inside a cathedral. Something enormous, built over generations, that none of them will see finished.

- Upright -

Craft. Collaboration. Skill. Recognition.

The Three of Pentacles upright is being good at something and being asked about it.

Your skill is being recognised. Where this card appears, somebody has noticed the quality of your work and is treating you as the person who knows, which is a different thing from being liked.

It is a card of collaboration, and specifically of the kind where each person contributes something different. The mason has the craft, the others have the plan, and neither is sufficient alone. Where this card appears, the work needs more than one set of hands and it goes well.

There is apprenticeship in it, in both directions. Learning from someone further along, or being the one consulted.

Craft is the theme underneath all of it. Doing something properly, taking the time, caring about the parts nobody will see. Cathedrals are built by people who will not live to see them finished, and this card carries that patience.

Do the work well. Let people see it.

That is the strategy.

- Reversed -

Poor work. No recognition. Lack of teamwork. Corners cut.

Reversed, the standard has slipped or the contribution is invisible.

The most common reading is work going unrecognised. Doing the skilled part and watching someone else present it, or being treated as a pair of hands rather than a mind. Reversed, this card asks whether you have actually said so.

It can mean poor collaboration. A team where nobody is listening, a plan imposed on the people who have to build it, or a group in which one person is carrying the quality.

Reversed frequently indicates corners cut. Work done to a standard you are not proud of, usually because of time or money. That accumulates.

There is also the reading of not yet skilled enough.

Something attempted before the craft was there, and the honest response is training rather than confidence.

- in Major Life Domains -

- Love -

Upright

A relationship being built deliberately. Working on it as a joint project, each person contributing something the other does not.

Reversed

Effort going unnoticed, or one person doing all the building. Also a relationship neither person is actually working on.

- Career and Money -

Upright

Very strong. Skill recognised, collaboration working, a project going well. Also apprenticeship, training and qualification.

With money, income from doing something properly rather than quickly.

Reversed

Work not credited, or a team that is not functioning. Also standards slipping under pressure.

With money, being underpaid for skilled work. Worth raising.

- Health -

Upright

Working with a professional who knows their craft. Follow the plan they give you.

Reversed

Advice that does not fit, or managing something alone that needs expertise.

- Yes or No -

Upright

Yes, and do it well.

Reversed

Not yet. The work or the team is not ready.
