· The Two Of Swords ·

MINOR ARCANA

Two. Stalemate. The decision refused.

A blindfolded figure sits on a low stone bench holding two swords crossed over her chest.

The blindfold is her own. Nobody put it there and nobody is holding her.

She is sitting still with her eyes covered by choice.

The swords are crossed at her heart rather than pointed at anything. They cancel each other out. Two equal weights held in perfect balance, which is another way of saying nothing is moving.

Behind her, still water and jagged rocks. Feeling and difficulty, both present, both behind her where she cannot see them.

A crescent moon hangs low. Partial light. Not enough to see clearly by even if the blindfold came off.

Her arms are folded across herself.

This is a defended position, but it is also a comfortable one.

- Upright -

Stalemate. Avoidance. Difficult choice. Denial.

The Two of Swords upright is refusing to look.

There is a decision in front of you and you are not making it. Not because the information is missing, but because both options cost something and choosing means accepting the loss. Where this card appears, the stalemate is being maintained rather than suffered.

The blindfold is the honest part. You are not being kept in the dark. You have arranged not to see, because seeing clearly would make the decision obvious and then you would have to make it.

There is genuine difficulty here and the card does not mock it. Some choices are between two things you want, or two people you care about, or a loss either way. The balance is real.

But nothing is being resolved by sitting here. The water behind her keeps moving whether or not she looks at it, and the situation is developing without her input.

Take the blindfold off. You will probably find you already knew.

- Reversed -

Decision made. Clarity. Truth surfacing. Continued avoidance.

Reversed runs two ways.

The first is release. The blindfold comes off, the swords come down, the decision gets made. Reversed, this card often marks the moment a long stalemate breaks, and it usually breaks suddenly after months of nothing.

Information frequently arrives with it. Something you were not being told, or something you had refused to look at, becoming visible and settling the matter for you.

The second reading is avoidance that has hardened. Reversed, the refusal to decide can become permanent, and the situation resolves itself without you in a way you would not have chosen. That is what happens when a stalemate is held long enough.

There is also overwhelm.

Too much information arriving at once after too little, which is its own kind of paralysis.
